The design of the 1969 Corvette L88 convertible built on the refined features of the 1968 model, a high-water mark for the Corvette production. Key differences between the 1968 and 1969 models include a smaller steering wheel, redesigned interior door handles and control knobs, and an ignition that was mounted on the steering column. Engineers also added a warning light that alerted drivers when the headlights hadn't completely opened.
Intended to be racers, the 1969 Corvette L88 convertibles had no heaters or radios, but featured a special front and rear suspension system and heavy-duty close ration four-speed transmission and brakes. Chevrolet produced 38,762 classic 1969 Corvette L88 convertibles between September 1968 and December 1969. However, only 116 of these vehicles contained the L88 engine.
